Deep Sea Fishing

More than half of the Mediterranean is over 1 000 metres deep. One type of fishing at such depths is called bottom trawling. It requires heavy gear that can destroy seabed habitats. With support from WWF, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) banned bottom trawling at depths beyond 1 000 metres in 2005 and established restricted areas in shallower areas to protect vulnerable deep sea habitats.
